Satisfactory Result for Seehafen Wismar GmbH
Seehafen Wismar GmbH ends the year 2020 with a satisfactory result despite the effects of the coronavirus crisis so far.
The amount of goods moved at the port by all modes of transport (ship, railway, truck) amounted to approx. 5.8 million tonnes, which is 12 % below the level of the previous year.
Wismar Seaport saw significant declines in the business segment of de-icing salt as a result of the mild winter of 2019/2020 and a temporary loss of orders in forestry products due to a fire at a company in the neighbouring timber cluster. There was also a continuing trend, which started in 2019, of the locally established industry sourcing its raw materials from domestic wind-fallen wood which takes away from imports by sea.
Despite this difficult market environment, Wismar Seaport is satisfied with the annual balance of the year just past since revenue from the infrastructure made a significant contribution to the overall result.
In the cruise shipping division only four of the envisaged 14 port calls by cruise vessels took place in the past year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the difficult market environment Wismar Seaport enters the year 2021 with optimism. Towards the end of 2020 we have for instance completed another multi-functional area of around 20,000 sq.m which is now available to our customers. And extensive measures are also about to begin in the field of digitalization.
