Opening of the new railway overpass

04/28/2023 – In the past three years, two level crossings have been dismantled and replaced by a three-track railway overpass. The aim of the measure was the separation of the inner-city road and rail freight traffic to the Wismar seaport for the smooth coexistence of freight and road traffic in the center of the Hanseatic city.
The port has around 25km of its own railway network and is electrified and connected to the European railway network. 14 of the 17 berths are equipped with a direct rail connection and the port's internal marshalling yard with 18 tracks offers the best conditions for the formation of block trains. In addition to the renewal of the tracks, the opening of the new railway overpass also means shorter shunting routes for the seaport of Wismar.
Around 50% of the goods destined for sea handling already come to the port by rail. A first-class connection of the location to the rail network is therefore an important factor for the seaport of Wismar and a valuable contribution to green logistics.
