Freighter from Hong Kong delivers salt from Wismar to the US
The state of emergency caused in the US by severe winter weather with lots of snow and heavy storms has created an urgent need for large amounts of de-icing salt for winter road clearance there.
The largest European salt producer, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG of Hanover has responded at very short notice and provided a shipload of approx. 26,000 t of de-icing salt in a matter of days. Coming from the Danish port of Grenaa, MV KIWI TRADER was commissioned within hours to make the journey to the US east coast with the destination of Newark (New York). The ship arrived in the Wismar roads already on Saturday and began loading in the afternoon, which was completed on Monday the 17th.
MV KIWI TRADER was built in Japan in the year 2000. The ship is 176 m long, 29 m wide and is able to load just under 32,000 t with a draught of 9.56 m. It is managed by PACIFIC BASIN SHIPPING LTD. based in Hong Kong.
By using the permitted maximum draught of 8.50 m the port of Wismar managed to set a new record of 25,680 t loaded into a single vessel with MV KIWI TRADER.
Thanks to the extended storage capabilities for salt products recently commissioned at Wismar seaport it was possible to pick up such a large amount in a matter of hours without any problems.
The Wismar branch of K + S Transport GmbH acted as the shipping agent in handling and looking after the vessel in port.
